I hear that Sal from Nino's on Henry St. will be opening up his own place soon. However, it's in the Prospect Heights area on Vanderbilt Ave. & Dean St. I can't wait to head over there & try it out! I spoke to Sal when I was having lunch at his brother Vinny's place on Smith St. and he told me that they will be having pizza from a wood fired oven in addition to great Italian favorites. I'm anxious to try it. I will let you know how it is.

Linda,
Sal's in on the SE corner of DeGraw and Court.
They give you a free magnet with every pie. Save 10 and you get a free pie.
You'll find your fridge getting crowded with them very fast!

Mario and Josh are both away for a spell (one in NJ, the other in London), so I went alone to Ninozzola's tonight and just grabbed some quick takeout.

The chicken parm role was the usual ebullient and effervescent treat, but I notice they had soup on the menu: Lentil (which my mother-in-law made this weekend, so I'll pass); Chicken (which seemed redundant after the roll but should be good for flu season) and Pasta Fagioli.

I took the latter and was quite pleasantly surprised. The sauce was really done well -- just the right balance of tomato, herbs and salt (not too salty like most places) and pasta was cut-up penne rigate rather than the usual ditalini, which actually was a nice visual and taste balance to the plump beans.

It was better than my dad's
As good as my mom's
Just a tad below my mother-in-law's (she adds more escarole from her garden)
And way better than my own.

Highly recommended.

PS: Tomorrow night (Tuesday), the special will be rabbit, and I'll be there with as many friends as I can inveigle around 9 p.m.

Ok guys here's the 411 on the Francesco Eatery food. Its Great, honestly its AMAZING!! I suggest getting the sicilian slice with the salami made in. It taste's just like their Lard bread over at Mazzola's. Oh and try their meat with fresh ricotta topped slice its out of this world. Excellent food, and trust me I should know I have been living on the block of Henry street for 22 years, I grew up on Nino's and Mazzola food so I should know. But I will miss Nino's food, and their workers, I passed by the other night and saw all new guys, none of the old one's like Sal, Mario, and Sal's son. It's sad really it is, especially that one of the boys just recently had their first kid. But I doubt it that Mazzola fired any of them, they probably will go and work for Sal and Nino's brother Vinny who owns Vinny's of Carrol Gardens on Smith St. Try it out guys, it's worth the time and the money. Enjoy.

THAT CLEARS UP THE MYSTERY. WE ARE NEW TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND DESPERATE FOR PIZZA ONE RAINY NIGHT AND COULDN'T DRUM UP A PHONE NUMBER FOR NINO'S! WE ORDERED FROM WORLD PIZZA (NO DELIVERY), AND IT WAS DELICIOUS EVEN THOUGH WE HAD TO WALK HOME IN THE POURING RAIN. WHERE IS SAL'S?

LaRosa & Sons on Smith & Pacific had phenomenally tasty personal pies, until a few months ago the ownership suddenly changed and it became Pacific Pizza or something -- the pizzas are now disgusting and practically inedible (unless the new owners have reworked their recipes since I last tried it 3 months back). The personal pies were:

Tomato, fresh mozzarella $7.75

Three Cheese $8.75

Pancett, Hot sausage, Hot peppers $9.25

Wild Mushroom, Fontina, White Truffle oil $10.75

Roasted Beet, Arugula, Parmesan $8.50

Second only to Lucali's IMO: Union House of Pizza (btwn hicks & columbia). Best delivery option in the area. Any pie w/fresh mozzarella is first rate. Try the one w/prosciutto...
