Honking on Clinton…time to enforce those penalties

Josh Guttman | October 5, 2007

A friendly neighbor recently sent me these photos drawing attention to the no honking policy that is far from being enforced in the neighborhood, particularly on Clinton Street. Not only do I sympathize, I would support an effort to enforce this law, which was clearly posted the last time someone grew upset with the impatient drivers. I also live on Clinton and am woken abruptly many mornings to the sound of cars honking as they try to advance through the traffic lights down to the Brooklyn Bridge. It’s not only inconsiderate to honk carelessly in this largely residential section of Brooklyn, but completely ineffective.

What do people think of this? I hadn’t realized the no honking restrictions were posted. I say we appeal to NYC to patrol the street for a few days enforcing this rule.no honk_web traffic_web

I found out last week that a quick 311 call allows you to file a complaint against the precinct.

how about coming to the 76th precinct community council, at the precinct house, usually the first tuesday and saying it to the captains face. meetings start at 7:30. (local papers usually give the meeting notice or now probably on line somewhere) all welcome! it is neighborhood involvement that got those signs.

I also live close to Clinton and I’d say it’s always been an annoyance.
But just wait until the IKEA opens — it should become a real cacaphony there.
Don’t these folks know that you can go up Van Brunt or Hicks St. and get to Atlantic Ave, the Norht Heights and/or the BQE much faster than Clinton? The light at Clinton and Atlantic is another culprit.

Unfortunately, the community council meeting was last Tuesday but I was told to call tomorrow to speak with someone in the community affairs department about filing a formal complaint to get the “Don’t Honk” sign enforced. I’ll keep everyone posted on my progress.

Honking in NY? Welcome to NY. Those signs aren’t exactly new. Cabbies making their way from Ham. Ave have a direct route to Tillary St. They did twenty years ago too when I lived there. People go to work, kids go to school. Good morning.

This just in on behalf of City Council Member, Bill de Blasio:

Thank you for contacting our office regarding the excessive honking on Clinton and Pacific Streets. I’m writing to let you know I have contacted the local precinct and explained the situation to them and they will send more officers to patrol the area in order to better enforce the “no honking” sign.

    Sincerely,

    Michal Harari
City Council Member Bill de Blasio

    My response:

    Hi Michal,

Thank you for getting back to me, much appreciated! I certainly hope that Precinct 76 sends out more officers to patrol the area, and I’ll know since I live right above the sign. Additionally, I plan on attending the November 6 community council meeting at Precinct 76 to bring up the issue and to see about getting the fine raised. Anything you can do to help me with these efforts is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Erin Freeley
