Urban Outfitters coming to Atlantic Avenue
Josh Guttman | October 18, 2007
As the onslaught of national chain retailers on Bergen Carroll-country continues, I understand that Urban Outfitters recently signed a lease on a 10,000 square foot space at 164 Atlantic Ave at Clinton Street. Rumors have been flying about this for the past few months and The Brooklyn Eagle broke details of the story last month. BK11201 also photo-blogged construction on the site recently. Some thoughts:
- Is our neighborhood quickly becoming the most McDonald-ized in Brooklyn? (even though earlier McDonald’s on Court rumors were unfounded)
- While I like Urban Outfitters at 14th and 6th when I get off the F-train there, I’m not sure I like it as much around the corner from my house. Thoughts?
- As The Brooklyn Eagle aptly points out, are there enough teenagers in the neighborhood to support a store like this? Especially considering smaller businesses that haven’t been able to succeed on Atlantic….like Ben and Jerry’s.

It seems that B&J closed for reasons that weren’t neccesarily related to finances: http://www.chowhound.com/topics/415137
Deetdu with wonder! What you wrong?
If you enjoy Urban Outfitters in Manhattan it doesn’t make sense that you wouldn’t also enjoy it in Brooklyn. Yeah, I’d rather take the subway into Manhattan to go to the same store I could go to during a pleasant walk around the neighborhood? This logic doesn’t make sense.
It doesn’t make you cooler to deprive yourself of conveniences. If you really do think it makes you cooler, maybe you should move to somewhere like Alaska, where there truly wouldn’t be conveniences. This pretend notion of Brooklyn being not part of the corporate culture of America is ridiculous and the ultimate in the pretention of hipsters.
That said, I’ve never found Urban Outfitters to be very interesting at all. Lots of overpriced, poor-quality crap for hipsters looking for the latest fad to make them awesome is stocked there regularly.
bi di be de be. Deetdu!
There is no confirmation that it will actually be an Urban Outfitters Store - they also own Free People and Anthropologie. It could be anthropologie - based on the demographic in the neighborhood…that would be nice.
If you would like tough, practical and flexibile clothes that are the equal of any urban predicament — and now that Frank’s Department Store and its Carhartts have been replaced by another oh-so-chic eatery, look at Skillers.
They were invented by a Swedish electrician and feature things like extra voluminous pockets that pull out of the normal front pocket (great for those handfuls of sheet rock screws or chihuahua puppies), built-in, slip-out kneepads (great if you’re do tile, roofing or extended obeisance), and knife pockets that will actually keep you and anything you sit on from getting cut to pieces.
There are also all kind of quite useful clip-on carriers intended for for all kinds of other tools that I’m sure will safely ensconce the rest of your gadgetry, baby accessories, reading marterials, tools, etc.
