More scoop on Clinton Street pothole

I got some more info recently on the crater-size pothole on Clinton and Verandah. Apparently, the contractors-for-hire filled it in with cold asphalt and left the site, when moments later, a street sweeper drove down Clinton. When traffic was backed up from a red light at Congress Street, the street sweeper conveniently got held up right on top of the newly filled-in hole, running their brooms for several minutes, spraying the asphalt in every direction. This explains why there is a distinct trail all the way up to Congress, though I think this was also dragged by subsequent automobile traffic. It looks like someone may have come back to fill in the hole last week, but didn’t bring nearly enough filler. Whatever was filled in looks to have since also scattered, as the bedrock below is again showing. Talk about a story of neighborhood stooges:)

Gowanus Harvest Festival at The Yard this Sunday

The Yard is hosting The Gowanus Harvest Festival this Sunday from 3pm until "Late Late Late".  I haven’t been down to check out The Yard yet, but this looks like a good opportunity to do just that. In addition to a full Beergarden in honor of Oktoberfest, they are promising live music, an organic farmstand, pony rides and best of all, a pumpkin carving contest.  The four bands playing are: Two Man Gentleman Band, Hot Time Harv’s Rollercoaster of Kicks, Casa de Chihuahua, BJs - NY’s hottest Rockabilly Trio.  Vendors include: Saxelby Cheesemongers, Red Jacket Orchards, Treats Truck, McClure’s Pickles, Brooklyn Kitchen.  Finally, Kelly Geary of Sweet Deliverance will be the organic chef in residence.  There will also be a composting demo by the LES Ecology Center.  This is good opportunity for all of us who have wanted to start composting, but haven’t motivated (a group that includes yours truly).

The Yard is located at 400 Carroll Street, between Bond and Nevins.

Pothole and debris left on Clinton Street

Clinton St Pothole 003_webSince Clinton Street seems to be a hot topic, has anyone else noticed the half-ass job the contractors did on the street in front of Cafe on Clinton two weeks ago. After working on the location for a week (I’m not really sure what they were doing), they filled in the hole they dug with dirt, which has since sunk several inches, leaving a nice-size pothole for cars to drive through. Maybe this is a blessing in disguise and cars will avoid the street as a result, but I doubt it. In addition, they left a mess of pebbles and debris scattered 50 feet in every direction with a clear trail all the way to Congress Street, which street sweepers seem to have a difficult time gathering. Who knows the scoop on this? I called 311 and reported it to NYC Dept of Transportation as well as Sanitation today.

Honking on Clinton…time to enforce those penalties

Josh Guttman | October 5, 2007

A friendly neighbor recently sent me these photos drawing attention to the no honking policy that is far from being enforced in the neighborhood, particularly on Clinton Street. Not only do I sympathize, I would support an effort to enforce this law, which was clearly posted the last time someone grew upset with the impatient drivers. I also live on Clinton and am woken abruptly many mornings to the sound of cars honking as they try to advance through the traffic lights down to the Brooklyn Bridge. It’s not only inconsiderate to honk carelessly in this largely residential section of Brooklyn, but completely ineffective.

What do people think of this? I hadn’t realized the no honking restrictions were posted. I say we appeal to NYC to patrol the street for a few days enforcing this rule.no honk_web traffic_web

Reconfiguration of neighborhood pizza joints

Nino’s on Henry is closed. I will miss their chicken and jalapeno slices, not to mention their creamy vodka pie. The rumor is that Mazzola bought them out. Don’t fret too much though, I hear the new establishment will still serve pizza. I wonder how much business Lucali has taken from other pizza parlors in the ‘hood. Personally, I am a Brooklyn Pizza and Calzone guy myself, but this neighborhood is heaven for pizza lovers. Hey BCers, what’s your favorite pizza joint? Time to start a new poll. Cast your vote now!! If we’ve forgotten one of the best, please let us know.

In our previous poll, 26/39 voters (67%) said the red deli at Clinton and Verandah should remain a coffee shop/sandwich bar. Good news….we may be in luck….

Edible Brooklyn helps guide our culinary exploration

You know Brooklyn has "made it" when we get a magazine dedicated to the cuisine of our great borough.  I stumbled across Edible Brooklyn recently and was pleasantly surprised by a thoughtful and introspective look at area restaurants.  A recent issue included a great article on the best late night options in town, a subject I’ve wondered about on more than one occasion.  Another profiled Frankie’s 457 Spuntino, complete with a recipe for an Orange Salad, a special off a recent menu.  The magazine is issued four times a year, one each season.  Annual subscriptions are available for $28.
