New Poll: You, the customers, create the Red Deli’s new menu

Renovations of the Red Deli on Cobble Hill Park are nearly complete and the new owners are putting together the menu now. This is your chance to speak up and let them know what you liked most about the previous deli - your favorite dishes and treats - and perhaps, what you didn’t like so much. Personally, I was a big fan of the salmon, seaweed and cole slaw sandwich on ciabatta roll, but that’s just me. I was also a big fan of the homemade hot chocolate in the winter. From what I understand, new management is still undecided on whether to serve espresso drinks or just plain coffee? Let them know what you think by casting a vote in the new poll. You can select two.
** I forgot something? Tell me in the comment area and I’ll add the most popular items to the possible answers.

Brownstoner got a sneak peak at Book Court’s coming expansion. Apparently, they’re going deeper behind the existing store, and adding a coffee lounge beneath a large skylight. As we’ve learned from recent activity on Bergen Carroll, our readers care deeply about our neighborhood coffee joints. I can only believe this will be enthusiastically received by the neighborhood. And I wholeheartedly agree with Brownstoner’s sentiments….it’s nice to see independent book stores and coffee houses enjoying prosperity. Book Court is a gem of the neighborhood.

The Red Deli on Verandah and Clinton is nearing the final touches of a massive makeover. Inside the previously run-down space, they’ve installed new terra cotta floors, a sparkling white tin ceiling and a new tile kitchen. The exterior has been patched up and painted and a new coat of glistening red paint invites would-be customers. “What is it going to be?” seems to be the most frequent question posed by passers by. Well the answer is (drum roll please) a new deli!! Charlie Statelman, who runs Cafe on Clinton two doors away, is taking over the space in a few weeks and putting together a Provence style deli with sandwiches, fruits and ready-to-go food and lunch options. At last check, no decision had been made on coffee/cappuccino.
20/23 Units sold at 52 Dean St Development

I stopped in the sales office at 52 Dean Street over the weekend. Apparently, 20 of 23 units in the complex have already been sold…just another data point that real estate in Cobble Hill remains on a bit of an island and hasn’t been seriously affected by market softening elsewhere. Still available in the hastily constructed, boxy apartment complex are two 2-bedroom units in the $900,000-ish range as well as the “Townhouse” of the complex, a 3-story, 3-bedroom unit with private entrance and outdoor terraces on two levels. I toured this unit and while it’s definitely a very nice home, I’m not sure it’s worth anywhere near the $2.7 million asking price. For that price, you could buy yourself a choice brownstone on a charming block and have a real backyard instead of a newly constructed asphalt terrace. It’s a sweet unit with plush spaciousness, but at that price, it’s a bit too cookie-cutter for us. I’m curious to see who buys it though and at what price.

Reminder — Please join your neighbors for our 1st Union-Clinton Block Meeting, and hopefully the start of an official Block Association.
When: Sat. 12/8 @11:30AM-1:00PM (perhaps not the full 90 minutes)
Where: Clinton Street branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, downstairs meeting room
PLEASE PASS ALONG THE WORD TO OTHER NEIGHBORS NOT ON MY LIST….and please RSVP if you plan to attend so we can get a sense of who will be there.
Discussion topics so far include:
1. Sharing knowledge/facts of development plans for the Court-Union-Sackett corners
2. Discussing prospective role for a block association in influencing the scale, aesthetics and safety monitoring of the development site
3. Defining objectives and structure for a block association (anyone know how to do this officially???)
This being our first meeting, nothing is set in stone - so please email any suggested agenda topics to add to the list. All ideas are welcome!
Looking forward to getting all of us together for a lively discussion and constructive planning.

Our friends over at Into The Box put together this touching neighborhood love story of Chris and Lydia and while doing so, found time to give a brief history of Carroll Gardens, touching on several neighborhood hot buttons - 360 Smith, Gowanus development/pollution and Smith/9th subway stop. Well done guys!!
Exit 9: Stop for an Appealing and Eclectic Assortment of Holiday Gifts

Looking to avoid Union Square Holiday Fair crowd crush? I did by stopping by Exit 9 Gift Emporium, which opened its Brooklyn location a little over a month ago and has since become my go-to gift source. It has a hand-picked selection of things in all the categories one usually thinks of for gifts, i.e. candles, kitchen gear, jewelry, books, knick-knacks, and ever-more clever, craveable versions of them. I personally crave practically everything in this store, from the brightly colored parrot bottle opener (despite already owning a perfectly serviceable tiki statue version) to the Voluspa tobacco candle (even though or perhaps because I don’t smoke), but can’t logically justify buying it for myself; hence, I buy it for everyone else.
Friends, family, and participators in office holiday gift swap are advised to stop reading here. How could one help but pick up guaranteed-to-be-unexpected gifts like I picked up yesterday afternoon, ranging from the useful (a genius shelf that attaches to your charger and holds your cell phone!), to the semi-useful (a set of postcards with cats demonstrating yoga poses!), to objects having no conceivable justification, but which are irresistible nonetheless (a set of good vs. evil unicorn figurines!).
The Carroll Gardens branch of Exit 9 Gift Emporium is located at 127 Smith St. between Dean and Pacific streets. (Original location: 64 Avenue A between 4th and 5th Streets)
