Developer to Unveil Plans at Behest of Union-Sackett Block Association and Other Community Groups

What:   The Clarett Group will unveil its long-awaited plans for 340 Court Street, the site of the former ILA Hospital, at a public meeting.

When:   Thursday, April 3, 2008 7:00 P.M.

Where:  PS 58 located on Carroll Street, between Smith and Court.  Take the F train to the Carroll Street stop.

Context:        The project at 340 Court Street arises as development issues in Carroll Gardens are causing increasing concern in the community, a resolution for a 50-foot height limit in the neighborhood has been proposed by Councilmember Bill di Blasio, and there is growing consensus on the need for downzoning.  This meeting presents an opportunity for the community to have its voice heard and for the Clarett Group to signal whether it is willing to work with local communities on contextual and responsible development.

A large turnout is expected for this open meeting, which will be hosted by the Union-Sackett Block Association, with support from local elected officials and community groups, including the Coalition for Responsible Development and the Carroll Gardens Neighborhood Association.  After the Clarett Group and its architect present the current plans for 340 Court Street, the community will have the opportunity to react and respond.

Dangerous cell tower installed on Henry @ President?

Got this note last week from a concerned neighbor….does anybody know anything about this?

Hi, I encountered a dangerous situation today at 553 Henry street. It looks as though they installed some new cell phone antennas on the roof. But here is where it gets good; not only did they do that, they also went ahead and put a huge antenna directly on the facade of the building on the 4th story. Now this is pretty scary being we have many small children walking by the building everyday. Not only will this become an issue with a good storm but looking at it makes me nervous.

Lucali, Red Hook Ball Fields top Yelp neighborhood listings

I just fired up Yelp to check something and noticed that Lucali and Red Hook Ballfields are ranked one and two respectively for all of Brooklyn. That’s impressive. I’ve been to both and consistently enjoy my experiences. While the Red Hook Ballfields isn’t technically a restaurant, it has plenty of food offerings and certainly provides a unique experience. Lucali is a newcomer to the neighborhood, but ran away with “best pizza in the ‘hood” last year.

From the Desk of Marty Markowitz

On January 6, 2007, The New York Times editorial board wrote the following:
“Gov. Eliot Spitzer is fond of saying that you can’t change the world by whispering…The goals he has set may be daunting to the old guard in Albany, but anything less from this governor would have been a grave disappointment.”

On March 12, 2008, Marty Markowitz said the following:
“In what can only be called a personal failure and tragedy, Governor Spitzer leaves office with great promise unfulfilled. As we move forward, I join all Brooklynites and New Yorkers in supporting our soon-to-be-Governor David Paterson. David and I served together in the Senate, and I have no doubt this Harlemite born in Brooklyn will prove to be a very effective Governor—by bringing people together, working with both Democrats and Republicans, and restoring people’s faith and trust in Albany.”

Below we see Marty, the lovely Mrs. Jamie Markowitz and crossword junkie Will Shortz (who allegedly is “the only person in the world to hold a college degree in Enigmatology”)

On Friday, February 29, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and wife Jamiewelcomed to the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament founded and directed by Will Shortz of The New York Times. Organizers say it was the largest turnout in the competition’s 31-year history.

“Brooklyn is home to the very best crossword competitors out there—including my wifeJamie, who can tackle the New York Times puzzle with the best of them. I welcome the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament and its hundreds of participants to the ‘big time’ after 30 years in Connecticut. If the clue for ‘1 across’ is ‘the best place in the world to hold a crossword tournament’—the only correct answer is ‘Brooklyn!’”
