Featured neighborhood photos is noticed!!

You may have noticed all the new photos appearing in the featured photo section recently.  When I put together Bergen Carroll a year or so ago, I setup a feature whereby readers could showcase their neighborhood photos by tagging them Bergen Carroll on Flickr.  For the better part of 12 months, nobody noticed and the only photos rotating through the system were ones I uploaded myself.  Then, something happened and some people figured it out.  Over the past two months, 80 neighborhood photos have been tagged Bergen Carroll on Flickr by 3-4 different photographers.   I love that this feature has been noticed and is being used as intended.  Thanks to Ryan and Wally for contributing the most prolifically.

Chicory, our beloved lunch spot, says goodbye

ChicoryIt’s a sad week in Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens. Chicory Brooklyn has officially closed its doors. Chicory is the unofficial 2007 winner of Bergen Carroll’s Best Sandwich and I’m heart-broken to see them go. A few years ago, I wandered in and met Gavin, an aspiring young restaurateur and the chef behind Chicory. I was immediately impressed by the creative sandwich combos, which included chicken under a brick (bricken), homemade brisket and bbq-like mixtures of sour kraut, fried onions and bbq sauce. As a vegetarian, I struggled with the beef, pork, chicken possibilities on the sandwices so suggested that they add a vegetarian option like seitan. My suggestion was met with giggles and later dismissed as Gavin told me he was a meat-eater and Chicory was a meat place. I continued my pleas over the next few months though, and eventually, they relented adding seitan to the menu. It later became a best seller. I’ve eaten an average of 1-2 sandwiches per week at Chicory for the past 18 months. My favorite became the Das Kraut, followed by the Dixie, both with seitan on seven grain. Chicory also boasted the best fries in the neighborhood, complete with mayonaise and vinegar. Gavin captured the essence of the neighborhood’s personality and put together a menu that catered to it. The restaurant is now for sale, and I know I join many other neighborhood residents in hoping the new owner recognizes the value of the menu they’ll inherit.  As for me, I’ll be in mourning for the rest of the week.

New Tennis league starting May 15

Tennis ballI came across this new tennis league starting up May 15. Since I’ve been wanting to get more serious about tennis this spring and play more matches, I’m hoping the league gets lots of interest. If enough Bergen Carroll-ers sign up, we could organize a local Brooklyn branch which would be ideal.

FYI - I signed up as advanced. If you wanna play me, join the same league. Technically, I’m probably advanced-intermediate, but I’m betting that most players overestimate their skills:)

From the Desk of Marty: Newark–Brooklyn Smackdown!

Yesterday, The Star-Ledger of New Jersey reported that NJ Devils owner Jeffrey Vanderbeek  is working with Newark Mayor Cory Booker to “assemble a group of investors to buy the Nets and move the basketball team to Newark.”  Unnamed sources also told the paper that Booker discussed the Newark deal with an official at Forest City Ratner – the developer behind the Atlantic Yards project.

A long-time supporter of the Atlantic Yards project, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz released a statement about the Star-Ledger’s report:

After years of obscurity mired in the Meadowlands, the Nets are ready for a slam dunk in the Brooklyn big leagues—who knows, maybe the Devils want to lace up and come here too! If my esteemed colleague Cory Booker in Brooklyn’s ‘western suburb,’ a.k.a. Newark, New Jersey, is looking for a professional basketball team, maybe he should ask the Knicks. But seriously, I own a Brooklyn Nets jersey and I’m ready to suit up and cheer for our new ‘dem bums’ in Brooklyn’s fabulous new Barclay’s Center.

Booker was none to pleased that Markowitz called Newark a “western suburb.”  In response, Booker said:

I yield to…Marty Markowitz, my esteemed colleague in the “eastern suburb” of Newark a.k.a Brooklyn, and would like to officially challenge him with the remaining shreds of my athletic pride to a one and one basketball game to battle for the Nets!

Markowitz replied, “…I am only 5-foot-5…I’ll accept the challenge only if I can have a ringer play against him.”

Maybe Markowitz could expand his list of classified ads to include a “proxy/ basketball star.”
