One of our former writers, Marie Carter, has recently published a novel, The Trapeze Diaries, with much fanfare. She’ll be reading from her book at two events, the invitations for which follow:
1) Reading @ McNally Jackson September 30
Please join us to celebrate new titles from Hanging Loose Press. Enjoy the acerbic wit of Tony Towle (WINTER JOURNEY), the energetic hiphop poetry of Michael Cirelli (LOBSTER WITH OL’ DIRTY BASTARD) and the lyrical prose of Marie Carter (THE TRAPEZE DIARIES).
Reading at McNally Jackson Bookstore, 52 Prince Street between Lafayette and Mulberry, NYC, 7 PM, Tuesday September 30. www.mcnallyjackson.com.
2) Reading at Sunny’s in Red Hook, November 2nd
Will be reading at Sunny’s in Red Hook on Sunday November 2nd near the new Ikea and Fairway (yes, you can buy Swedish furniture AND go to a reading all at once!).
I hear they do an awesome cheap brunch at Sunny’s and it’s by the water so a nice Sunday afternoon outing.
Sunny’s
253 Conover Street
Brooklyn, NY 11231
Sunday November 2nd, 3 PM
Directions at www.sunnysredhook.com. (Water taxis throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn will take you to IKEA).

Trader Joe’s to open doors September 26

The Brooklyn Paper has reported that the long-awaited Trader Joe’s on the corner of Atlantic and Court will open its doors on Friday, September 26. Great news for all of us foodies who live in the ‘hood. I can’t wait to get my hands on the wide assortment of fresh produce, bulk grains and general healthy goodness they offer. But it’s not necessarily as positive a development for many merchants who have been our trusted suppliers over the years. Certainly, Pacific Green and Key Foods will both feel some pain as Trader Joe’s intercepts customers that once relied on those two outposts. I think it’s no coincidence that Key Foods recently stepped it up a notch with an elaborate flower and plant stand, though not sure if this will compensate for the gap in product. I predict people will look back on this as perhaps, the single most transformative thing to happen during the neighborhood’s ascent. It’s true, a good supermarket can move mountains.

On Friday night, two young men were shot near the corner of Bergen St. at Nevins. On Saturday afternoon, a local police officer confirmed that both men were in stable condition. We haven’t seen much coverage in the local press so no telling what this was about. Below are some photos taken at the scene:

I just got an email about this exciting group of musicians performing a free show Sunday at Prospect Park Bandshell. This looks to be a great addition to the already stellar Celebrate Brooklyn summer lineup.
Join host Michael Showalter in celebrating JDub Records’ fifth anniversary, with performances from Gypsy folk-rock band Golem, hip-hop and reggae from Tel Aviv’s Soulico, the Ladino-infused Sephardic tunes of DeLeon, and the ritualistic afro-pop and cantorial blues of the Sway Machinery, with special guests Jon Langford of the Mekons, the Hungry March Band, and more!

Half of Clinton Street blocked off for commercial today?

What’s up with the blockage of Clinton Street from Warren to Amity today for a commercial? How do people feel about this inconvenience…. both sides of the street sequestered? It’s great that film producers have discovered the beauty and charm of our neighborhood, but the frequency of filming and street closures is getting to be overkill. Sure, the city and local merchants get paid, but what about us?, you know…the ones who are actually inconvenienced. Please chime in and voice your opinions on this.

Too hot and wet for you to check out Renegade Craft Fair or the Brownstoner flea market? There’s still a chance to see emerging arts and crafters right here at Boerum Hill’s new handmade gallery, Fact & Fancy. Right now the gallery is showing work from over 40 artists, many of whom you may or may not have had the chance to catch at Renegade. This small gallery is curated to the brim with prints, original art, ceramics, clothing and jewelry – every stitch handmade right down to the hand-painted faux bois floors. Last Saturday was the opening for their first show, Wet Paint. Pop by to check out the work of local and international artists and get yourself a free mustache! Hope you can check it out! Ikea is open in Red Hook!!

After years of controversy, construction, anticipation, the first Ikea in New York City opened in Red Hook, Brooklyn this morning, widely covered by the likes of Gothamist and The Brooklyn Paper. By the time the doors opened at 9:00 a.m., hundreds of shoppers had gathered on line outside the Swedish retailer. A festive atmosphere prevailed without any of the community dissent that had threatened the project from the beginning.
Rather than demonstrations from neighbors worried about the incoming wave of traffic, the crowd was largely enthusiastic, though one woman on line was reportedly heard yelling, “Where’s my job?” (Ikea gained support from some residents in Red Hook — a neighborhood with one of the highest poverty rates in New York City — with the promise of jobs, but has not released details about its some 500 new employees.)
The one and only Brooklyn borough president Marty Markowitz was on hand to welcome Ikea, declaring, “From this day forward, Red Hook will be one of the best known neighborhoods in New York City and New York State… Hundreds of local residents now have the opportunity to move up the economic ladder… Germany is currently the leading country in terms of Ikea sales and the United States is #2. Well, that’s about to change. Here in Brooklyn we don’t like being #2 to anyone and I have no doubt that in a very short time the Brooklyn Ikea will be the most prosperous of the 281 worldwide locations!”

You might have noticed the recent slow-down in articles on Bergen Carroll. It’s because nearly all our writers parlayed the exposure they received from Bergen Carroll and were lured away by bigger NYC publishers. If you live in Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Red Hook or Boerum Hill, have a pulse on what’s happening in the ‘hood and like to put pen to paper (or words to website), please get in touch about joining the sexiest local blog in New York City.
